Looking for what’s next!

I have no advice today. Sorry I’m not sorry.

So now that I am in day TWENTY FOUR (gasp!) of my 30 day challenges, I am already looking ahead to “what’s  next?”

why is real life not like this show? 😦

I have really enjoyed having a general Goal that I am sticking to over the course of these challenges. Maybe I’m the only one, but sometimes the mundane, office life, of mid-twenty-year-olds can be less than…challenging. While I do use my brain at work for projects and what not, there certainly is VERY little physical activity in my day to day activity, and a lot of my daily activities are routine. Having a goal outside of work is a good way for me to look forward to something (i.e. yoga after work each night), to plan things (i.e. attempting to “cook” vegetarian meals), and to try something new (i.e. not drinking).

When people put pictures like this in Powerpoint Presentations, I want to punch them.

I am tinkering with several ideas, but I keep coming back to the thought of the Primal Blueprint, by Mark Sisson. This is similar in “diet” (<–this is not some fad diet where you magically drop 30 lbs in 30 days, or other bullshit claims out there), to the Paleo way of eating, however The Primal Blueprint allows for dairy, much more fat, and encompasses a lifestyle component rather than just guidelines to healthy food choices.

 

That sounds like a smart idea...

In my crossfitting days I was Paleo-ish for a while and honestly felt amazing. I’ve done it off and on several times but always end up falling off the Primal/Paleo wagon while drinking. When I switch to whole, nutritious foods, and cut out processed things/sugars/artificial sweeteners (<– that’s the hardest part for me, I am a self-admitted Splenda addict. Sigh.), I feel sooo good! Then I get a few drinks in me, and pizza/ice cream/whatever looks mighty fine, and BAM off the healthy Primal wagon. And I stay off for some reason.

I don't know why this is here. I just like it.

I think dedicating a block of time to really sticking to a Primal lifestyle, and being held accountable here, may be just what I need. Also, each time I eat Primal I am forced to actually cook things, which is a challenge in itself. Someday I may not be able to afford Subway every night….haha. So cooking and trying new foods is always a bonus, even if it is more work. Boo 😦

So while I still have 6 days to decide (and of course one splendid free day where I am so going to get Cold Stone Creamery Ice Cream — they just opened back up in CT, sooo excited!), I am leaning towards a 60 day Primal Blueprint “Challenge”. This means limiting alcohol intake (I think I may do no-booze to limit my bingey tendencies, we’ll see. Tizzle’s Sparkle-Themed B-day Bar Crawl Party is Labor Day weekend…oh yes, I said Sparkle!),

I must find this for the party!

eating whole nutritious foods, excluding grains, sugars, and emphasizing good fats, meats (gasp! meat?!? yes, meat), and vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts.

The Primal Blueprint encourages physical fitness as well. It discourages chronic cardio, and emphasizes mixing things up. Lift heavy things, sprint once in a while, and play. Um, yes please! So I would most likely be following a 3 day on 1 day off wod (work out of the day) style routine, seeing as how I have an arsenal of equipment at home that allows for constantly varied (crossfit-style) short routines that include bursts of cardio and strength. And, of course, I would continue to practice Bikram Yoga. That is my mental savior!

Speaking of Yoga, I was NOT pleased with last night’s instructor. He was visiting from another studio, and well….he was not my favorite. I hate when I am thinking more about how sucky the teacher is than I am focusing on my breath and postures. But I was.

ummmmm hmmmm!

He had an annoying voice, did not follow the dialogue, and was holding postures for the wrong amount of times. Short postures were too long, long too short. All around it was shitty. And he looked exactly like Sideshow Bob.

Gross.

Aaaand, after thinking mean thoughts about him for 90 minutes, it was off to Mini-Mom’s house to celebrate my niece’s THIRD BIRTHDAY! 🙂

Yesterday was pretty kick ass. I saw one of my best friends, had an amazing yoga session, and hung out at my sisters before doing stupid grown-upy things like grocery shopping and putting away laundry.

So, as I just mentioned, I got to see one of my best friends from high school, her awesome fiancé (they’ve been together since Sophomore year of college, he’s a great guy, we all approve), and their two adorable munchinks, 5 years old and 8 months. I LOVE babies. But more importantly, I love babies that are not mine.

I got to thinking, it is a much better deal to be an aunt/let your friends pop out a bunch of babies than to have kids of your own.

I have two arguments as to why. They’re simple, but pretty damn solid:

1. When they cry, I get to give them back.

This thing is mocking me!

2. My ass is the only ass I have to wipe.

That pretty much sums it up.

I considered running this morning. The end.

Not today, my friend. Not today.

Then I got ready for work after hitting the snooze button. Today my hair looks like that of a 40 year old tight-ass. Fail.

what IS that?

In other news, I am looking forward to tomorrow night because me and GRose are going to the movies to see Crazy,Stupid Love. SCORE! It looks awesome. And I totally want to bone Ryan Gosling.

Marry me?

Also, I saw THIS over the weekend.

Uh...why?

I want to specifically point out that I do NOT want to bone the owner of that gem.

So to reiterate my bone list:

This little guy (grasshopper) was on my side view for the entire ride into work this morning. I saw him on there when I got on the road and was so sad thinking how he was going to fly to his death once I got on the highway and picked up speed. Not so.

That little sucker held on all the way! You should too, dammit 😉

Day 10!!

So in case you didn’t know, I am doing 3, 30-day challenges simultaneously. They go together nicely:

No booze, 30 Day Bikram Challenge, and 30 days meat-free.

Today is day 10 of the challenge, and I am feeling Fab-You-Luss! While dedicating 90 minutes every day to Bikram is a bit time-consuming, I am loving the mental clarity it provides, and as an endurance athlete at heart, I love a 90 minute kick-in-the-ass. Woot.

I am eating foods that I love, and that fuel me for successful yoga practice (and runs, now that I’m back hitting the pavement, WOOT).

Booze makes practicing Bikram feel like death, so not drinking at all has kept me motivated to return to the sauna each day.

So yeah, here’s to 20 more! Cheers!

So yesterday was MUCH better than my craptastic Tuesday. I got my tire replaced (have to go back today because they didn’t balance them apparently. Thanks, tools!). But I can go over 55mph now! Holla!

Then I got my stretch on at yoga, there was an instructor I’ve never had before and his voice was mega soothing. It was good.

After yoga it was time for Moe’s! YUM! I showered (kind of) at the studio and took my slighty-less-sweaty self to meet the sister, kids, and my dad for some family time 🙂

It was a silly time indeed!

Hahaha, I am just kidding, obviously! But this photo cracks me up. I don’t really know what’s  going on, but nonetheless, it looks funny 🙂

This morning I got my sweat on with a 3 mile easy run

Then I took a picture and realized I am getting old, wtf…wrinkles?

I really need to start wearing making in a few of these shots so you don’t think I always look like death. I mean I usually do, but not ALWAYS.

The run felt good, but I was constantly looking at my Garmin. I need to really focus on just taking my “easy runs” EASY. I don’t want to over do it and overtrain…again. I know that I am not going to be nearly as fast as I was last year when I was running all the time, so I need to take that into consideration and not beat myself up over pace. Just focus on getting back in the groove of it.

That groovin’ picture just reminded me, I missed So You Think You Can Dance last night! GASP! Thank god I dvr that ish! Gotta find time to catch up tonight!

On another note. I am seeing decent “traffic” on here (decent is a relative term. let me be delusional and think my “page visits” stats are awesome, k?), yet barely any comments. Um…DUH Bee, maybe you should ask people things you want to know/discuss? Derr!

So here are a few questions for ya 🙂 Please talk to me, I want to know what’s  up with you..since I stalk a lot of your blogs and think you’re all pretty fuggin’ awesome.

Do you have/use a Garmin for your runs? Opinions on using it for “easy” runs in a training program please!

Muffin[tops], Pancakes, Races??

A little bitchy advice,

Dear women everywhere,

Muffin tops. NO. I can’t explain how much better everyone would look if they would just purchase the right size pants. Even skinny skinny girls can look disgusting if they try to squeeze into pants that are CLEARLY too small for them. I hate muffin tops with a passion. They are completely avoidable!

Moving on, yesterday was awesome and productive!

I woke up, with mega bed head, gave Charlie some mommy time (I swear he is not in pain in this photo. He’s cuddling my face. And he smells horrible, btw).

Then it was off to Grandma’s (Mini-Mom’s) house to wake up the munchkins and have some pancakes!

So once all three of them were awake, we hung out for a bit and waited for the G-Rents to get there.

While we waited, Penny found the baby powder bottle in my Mom’s gym bag. Hahha! Messy, but funny 🙂

G-Rents finally got there, and we began the delish feast of blueberry pancakes, melon, home made potatoes with onions, and of course a little oatbran!

It didn’t take long for the kids to find the hose again, and some splish splashin’ went down:

Penny was wearing a pair of her brother’s shorts (from when he was younger) and was rocking a sag. Hey, at least it’s not a muffin top!!

Before we knew it, my sister got there to take the kids home (and bring Griffin back to sleep away camp for another week. He LOVES it).

I went home to get some cleaning done before yoga. I was mega productive. Cleaned the kitchen AND scrubbed the refrigerator, did the bathrooms, and magic eraser-ed some of the walls.

I needed a little pre-yoga fuel so I make a BBQ Hummus Tortilla Pizza. (exactly what it sounds like, a tortilla with hummus bbq sauce and a little motz on top. Toss it in the oven until crisp, nom).

Yoga was awesome yesterday. I felt good the whole class. I was able to do each pose to my max (with the exception of toe stand on my right ankle), and just felt goooooooood.

Challenge Day 7!!

Yoga: Feeling great, some days have been challenging with the heat/humidity so high here in CT, but loving it nonetheless.

Booze: NO BOOZE all weekend. Impressed? Yeah, you should be.

Veggie: Yum. I never thought this one would be too hard, I love vegetables, grains, and even tofu.

Looking forward to completing the “challenges.”

AND! I am considering…..THE HARTFORD HALF MARATHON! YIKES!

While I haven’t been running much (ankle twisted/summer heat/yoga practice) I am itching to get back to a regular running schedule. This lil guy is dying for some attention:

So I am 12 weeks out. That’s kind of perfect for me to start a Higdon 12 week Intermediate Program…

I think I will feel it out, but start training this week. If my ankle is acting up or I am feeling too burned out from yoga and training, maybe I won’t do the half. Sometimes races turn me into a crazy training machine and I overdo it. Soooo we’ll see. But I know I am missing my runs, and if I follow a training program it will keep me from overdoing it too much! 🙂 We’ll see…!

So yesterday was a great Saturday, I hope everyone else had a fabulous day too!

I woke my ass up early and headed to 8am yoga. I am a 4:30 pm-er usually, so it was a bit of a mix up to my system. I am all about switching things up when it comes to fitness, but woah. My system took a bit of warming up for that. Standing series got me very light-headed, but I was able to focus and get through it. By the time I got to floor series I was feeling a bit “high” (see: dizzy/slighty awesome) and got through floor series and was extra bendy.

Walking out of the studio felt AHHH-MAYYY-ZING. I was ready to start my fun day!

First I showered – not something that happens every Saturday, so you’re welcome, World. Then it was off to get my emissions done on my car. I was pleasantly surprised that it only costs $20 and my car passed. AND it only took like 20 minutes. SCORE!

Then I grabbed myself a veggie Subway (not from the gas station, thank you very much),

and headed to my moms to nom it/catch a snooze before she got back from the movies (she saw Horrible Bosses and said it wasn’t that good. Boo, I wanted to see it, I think I’ll wait for Redbox now. $1 isn’t bad for a sucky movie!). I was preeeetty refreshed and excited when she came home and woke me up and I saw it was almost time for the kiddos to get there.

Penelope came in with usual Diva attitude that cracks me up!

“What?! You think I’m not the best at everything?! Watch this split, guys!”

Damnnnnnnnn Penny, one shoe and everything?! Mini-mom was mega impressed, as you can see!

We decided it was time to play some cards (My oldest nephew Griffin just got back from sleep-away 4H camp and learned lots of new card games from his bunk mates).

Eliot was ready to play!

Penny was confused at why her cards didn’t look like they boys…

“Zebra?! WTF does Zebra mean Aunty?!”

We decided to ditch the crazy cards and play in the sprinkler since it was 9234892 degrees out and my Mom doesn’t have AC. (Crazy lady!!)

Eliot was being a typical boy and getting silly (the sprinkler was his super pee….hahahaha):

All that silliness worked up an appetite for some nachos


Then things got HILARIOUS.

Mini-Mom has a chipmunk problem, for real! They are taking over her yard/garage. She is so passionately anti-chipmunk it cracks me up. So much so, in fact, the boys built “chipmunk weapons” which they use to chase the chipmunks out of garage. Haha. It is sooo funny.

And then I told Penny to give me her mean face. She’s good!

Mini-Mom went to get some birdseed out of the Garage and  “AHHHHHH!” she screamed bloody murder and ran out of the garage! There was in chipmunk IN the bag! hahaha. It was ridiculous, and then the boys got a little scared that the chipmunks may actually come after them, and we put the stick away!

Then it was time to clean up and have some dinner. My mom and the kids had burgers, and I enjoyed a Spicy Black Bean Burger, from Morning Star with cheese and salsa. YUM! I totally forgot to take pictures! And then we had chocolate creme pie that my mom made, also not photographed. My bad!

And then the kids were STILL hot (ugh 90 degrees at 8pm? Yikes!) so they came out while my mom was watering the flowers to get sprayed with the hose.

Life is good!

Around 9 I headed home for Charlieboy, and to get my sleep on! Now I am headed back to Mini-Moms for blueberry pancake breakfast. G-Rents are invited too! Yay 🙂
